Dance Classes Taught by Carolyn Krueger
May 31 & June 1, 2013 On the Queen Mary!
FRIDAY, MAY 31st, THE BOARD ROOM Mahur - Classical Persian Dance: The Persian classical musical mode Mahur is said to express spiritual ecstasy and to be associated with the natural element wind or breeze. This essence is conveyed in dance through turns and spins; traveling movements; and delicate, fluid hand and arm movements that gesture from the heart weaving a calligraphic design in the intimate space surrounding the dancer. The body is buoyant while the weight lifts skyward. Appropriate attire for this workshop includes an optional dance skirt or hip scarf and bare feet or flat shoes.
SATURDAY, JUNE 1st, THE REGENT Messenger of the Heart – Ferghana Style Uzbek Dance: The Ferghana style is the most lyrical of the three styles of Uzbek theatrical dance. Its gentle, gliding footwork and turns; supple torso movements; delicate arm and hand gestures and facial expressions combine to convey the messages of the heart. The heart chakra is awakened and energy is released through the eyes, hands, head, arms, torso--with the eyes and hands being the most important channels. When performed to classical music, the Ferghana dance style realizes the aesthetic ideals of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) with its expression of longing for Divine love. For this workshop, a dance skirt and character shoes are ideal, but any dance shoe is fine. Bare feet are welcome, but might make turning more difficult.
Master Classes and More
Artistic Director Carolyn Krueger also teaches master classes, workshops and private lessons in traditional dances of the fabled Silk Road. Her
thoughtful instruction helps students to experience AUTHENTIC embodiment
of style as opposed to IMITATION of technique. Most sessions include
standardized warm-ups followed by instruction in foundational technique:
hands, arms, head, posture, footwork, turns, movement quality and
musicality. Dance combinations and basic choreography blend technique
with performance skills and expression—the “soul” of the dance.
Traditional and
contemporary Central Asian vocal and instrumental pieces accompany
elegant, rhythmic and poetic movement vocabulary. Cultural information
regarding dance context, spiritual and symbolic content, music,
costuming, and history is given.
Classes offered in:
--UZBEK dance technique and choreography emphasizing the lyrical Ferghana style, with introduction to Khorezm and Bukharan styles of Uzbek theatrical dance.
--TAJIK folkloric technique and choreography from Samarkand.
--Modern PERSIAN styling, technique and choreography.
--Classical AZERBAIJANI technique and choreography.
--And more!
